Having devoted many years to figure drawing and clay sculpture she feels a close connection with the importance of self discovery in art making. Her first professional job in art was as a tapestry weaver with Scheur Tapestry Studio in Manhattan. There she made corporate tapestries for IBM, RJR Nabisco, Lakewood Wineries as well as private collectors. Her love of drawing developed during this time having the experience of attending the Art Students League, The School of Art and Design and Parsons School of Design, taking many drawing classes. In addition to teaching drawing and clay with the different schools in the area, she has worked with children and seniors on large scale mural installations. Susan shows her figurative clay sculpture at Goldesberry Gallery in Houston and participates in different shows in the area. In 2009, she was chosen for New Texas Talent through the Craighead Greene Gallery in Dallas

Susan's exhibition at VAL "You and Me and Everybody We know" opens Saturday, December 5th with a reception at 7pm that is open to the public.

During these last years I have been absorbed with your relationships and my relationships and everybody we know relationships. The animal in man has been an ongoing obsession since I was a child. Viewing them much like seeing animals in the clouds. Somehow I am stuck on birds, cats and rabbit’s. They have come to represent you and me and everybody we know. I enjoy playing with many medias and love stepping over the boundaries of mixing them all together. The hot days of June and July this year found me scratching and sanding and drawing and scratching some more into the canvas. It was heaven and got me through the heat.

Happenings at VAL

The Visual Art League has been buzzing with activity this fall, from Bryce Lafferty’s 3D watercolor creations, to a three day Art Sale Fundraiser, including a wine tasting. Both artists work with natural materials that are influenced by nature. Opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, January 24th at 7pm. Exhibition will run through Saturday, February 28th. Maxwell earned his B.A. at the University of Dallas and his M.F.A. at Southern Methodist University. He currently lives in Dallas and is a professor at Brookhaven College where he teaches sculpture, three-dimensional design and drawing. It was the human figure that sparked Maxwell’s interest in his formative years. It is the simplicity of natural form that he has grown to deeply understand. Looking, touching, materials and form are all inseparable in his sculpture. Movement, change and light are the lifeblood of nature and are some of the energies that he attempts to trap in his work. Ehrich earned her B.F.A. at the University of Texas and her M.F.A at the University of North Texas. She currently lives in Dallas and is a department chairperson and professor at Brookhaven College. Ehrich’s makes clay objects that are influenced by nature. Embedded in the layers of intention and accident are the ideas that inspire Ehrich’s work: the sensuality of form, implied volume, human touch to a natural object, symbols of fragility, healing, and regeneration. Maxwell’s work has been featured in exhibitions at Brookhaven College, Mountainview College, Barry Whistler Gallery in Dallas, Rubin/Mardin Gallery in Seattle, Washington. His work is included in numerous public and private collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum, California, Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Atlantic Richfield Company, and Southwestern Bell. Cornelius will be showing new work as well as older pieces that have lead up to his most recent work. His exhibition opens Saturday, December 6th with a reception at 7pm. Cornelius will give a slide presentation of his work on Tuesday, January 6th at 7pm. The reception and talk are free and open to the public.
A professional artist since 1977, Ray-Mel Cornelius has received commissions from clients as diverse as Boy Scouts of America, the Dallas Opera, Electra Records, Frito Lay, GTE, Minute Maid, New York Times, Ocean Spray, Samsung, Time Inc., and many others. Cornelius’ work has received recognition from the New York Society of Illustrators, Graphics, Communication Arts and Print Magazines.
Cornelius grew up in the North Texas area, and received his art degree from East Texas State University (now part of the Texas A&M system). After living and working in Los Angeles and Houston, Cornelius settled back in Dallas, where he lives with his wife, Becky, and the ebb and flow of their collection of Feline-American adopted children.
Inspired by a trip to Northern New Mexico in 1996, Cornelius started to pursue his interest in landscape painting and has been on a dual illustration/painting track since then. He sees illustration and fine art as two sometimes quarrelsome siblings of the same family, and so far has been able to keep them in the same studio without too much chaos. For Cornelius, illustration serves to visually enhance and illuminate other forms of communication, such as literature, music, news and everything else.
Cornelius paints by layering colors, one over another, to achieve a representation of light defining form. Since he sees light as an additive element, i.e. a form is totally in shadow and basically formless until light delineates its form, Cornelius begins with a dark under painting and defines the form by applying layers using lighter tonal values until the desired chiaroscuro effect is reached. The fast drying qualities of the acrylic medium best facilitates this color blending technique.
Cornelius’ paintings reflect an interest in the landscape and the mythologies that accompany it. They give him the opportunity to explore representational and abstract subjects, with occasional forays into figurative interpretations of his version of Americana and folklore.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://valtex.blogspot.com/2008/11/ray-mel-cornelius-from-here-to-there.html' title='Ray-Mel Cornelius "From Here to There" McCambly began documenting these moments in 2006 on the beaches of Puerto Rico and its outer islands and has recently continued this research on the beaches of Southern California. The undulating shapes of hand-cut paper combine with cast shadows to suggest, on an exaggerated scale, the frothy sensuality of the moment.
Originally from the North Shore of Boston, MA, Jessica McCambly lives and works in San Diego, CA. She earned a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Texas, College of Visual Arts and Design. During her time in Dallas, she also served as a member and officer at 500X Gallery, Texas’ oldest, artist-run gallery. Currently, McCambly is an Assistant Professor of Art at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, CA.
Her large-scale works on paper and sculptures have been featured in exhibitions at local galleries such as Dunn and Brown Contemporary, And/ Or Gallery, 500X and Holly Johnson Gallery. McCambly’s work has also been shown at the Dallas Museum of Art, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, The Dallas Contemporary, The Garage Gallery in San Diego, CA and in the London Biennale.
McCambly is a current member of the national artists collective Gimme Baby Robots and will be showing a series of sculptures and drawings based on the natural phenomenon of minus tides in an upcoming solo exhibition at IGLOO in Portland, OR.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://valtex.blogspot.com/2008/09/jessica-mccambly-moment-after-wave.html' title='Jessica McCambly "The Moment After a Wave Crashes"

On October 3rd, between 6:00 and 9:00 pm, the Visual Art League of Lewisville will be commencing its fourth annual fundraiser. As in previous years, VAL will be offering donated, original artworks for sale, all for under $50.00. Most of these works will be the products of VAL members generously given to help support and maintain our gallery. We have been proud that we have one of the finest, non-profit gallery spaces in North Texas. The cost of rental and utilities for this space has been underwritten by city grant but, like most arts organizations today, we are being asked to carry a larger share of our expenses. Our annual fundraiser is our primary effort at raising these funds.
To begin this year’s fundraiser we will be shaking things up by raffling works created specifically for VAL and largely on site by regionally known artist and eminent zoologist Pinky Diablo (AKA: Tom Sale). Pinky will be producing art during the event and is open to suggestions (within reason and propriety) offered by those in attendance. A required entry fee of $5.00 will give each attendee the opportunity to win a framed “Pinky” of their choice. Drawings will be held 5 times during the evening, starting at 6:30pm and repeated every 30 minutes through 8:30pm. All of Pinky’s pieces remaining after 8:30 will be available for purchase (unframed) between $35.00 and $50.00 each. The fundraiser will recommence on Saturday, the 4th (without Pinky), and run from 11:00 to 6:00pm. All proceeds will go to supporting the Visual Art League of Lewisville. All art lovers are invited. After graduating with a Masters in Painting and Drawing from UNT in 1990, Sale and his artist wife Dottie Love have taught, produced and exhibited art all over Texas. They currently live near Ennis on a 25 acre ranch and raise miniature zebu cattle. Both artists teach for Hill College. About eight years ago Sale created a fictional persona named Pinky Diablo who has become a well-recognized artist in his own right. Sale has shown his art and given a workshop at the Visual Arts League in Lewisville, and now Pinky Diablo will have his turn to shine there. On Friday Oct. 3, Pinky will make a personal appearance from 6-9PM. Originally, Pinky was billed as traveling huckster with a pink trailer of oddities and art who visited art museums and galleries around the state. Often Pinky Diablo’s trailer would show up at the gallery opening of Sale’s work. Sale jokes, “It was performance art. Pinky Diablo is a lot more famous than I am. People had heard about Pinky Diablo, but didn’t realize until they saw him that it was really me!” Sale recently worked for a year as a zoo keeper at the Dallas Zoo, and put on an exhibit of animal themed watercolors to raise money for the zoo keeper’s pet project—rhino conservation. Avid gallery goers in Dallas know that Sale is interested in using animals as subject matter in his small sculptures, and so is his alter-ego, Pinky. “But when Pinky paints,” Sale explains, “he can get a lot wilder. He paints chickens, giraffes, elephants, and even skeletons in a quick, slapdash fashion that is both humorous and quirky. Pinky paints on the insides of discarded book covers because he can’t afford canvas!” Pinky’s trailer has been exhibited at galleries in Galveston, Houston, San Antonio, and to the Dallas Contemporary Museum. Recently Sale (in his Pinky guise) has been offering his services by the day to his collectors. He packs up his studio in a suitcase and arrives at the collector’s doorstep in the morning and paints on book covers all day. Sale also sells Pinky's art at Dallas' well-known fashion boutique, Dolly Python on Haskell Avenue. Sale adds, “Pinky can't paint fast enough to keep them stocked! These days Pinky and I are becoming more and more alike. It’s a good thing that I’m still glad I created him.” (Contributed by Tom Sale) Pinky Diablo, detail of "Chicken in the Wilderness" 2008

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://valtex.blogspot.com/2008/09/visual-art-league-fundraiser-oct-2-4.html' title='Pinky Diablo (A.K.A. Laurie thinks of the relationships between the paintings as similar to that of an ensemble in music, each painting makes a statement.

Laurie Weller talk

Laurie Weller provided a slide presentation on the history of her work.
